Saint Germain

My favourite area to roam in Paris! Nice boulevards and neat little back streets, good food and interesting shops.  RE: The Group Manoeuvre – (I am not used to travelling with so many people!) I miss just wandering around indiscriminately and getting lost but you have to be more conscientious about your routes when you’re in a group. One of my companions likes to know where they are and where they are going at all times, some (poor things!) have sore feet and my mom is a slow walker. We are all compromising to a degree, but for the most part, enjoying ourselves.

I think I enjoyed the Cluny Museum more than my fellow travellers.

We eventually made it to Luxembourg Garden and we got to sit and draw a bit. The Medici Fountain is pretty popular….for good reason. I wish we had one in Victoria, so we could be all, “I’ll meet you at the Medici Fountain!” and have such a beauty spot to sit and wait for someone.

Parisian Facades and Tour Eiffel

We spent most of the day hanging around the Eiffel Tower neighbourhood, which is an obvious security hotspot. We were a few blocks away on Rue Le Cler (a foodie street) and entrance to the street required opening our bags and purses for police security posted on the corner. The place had a weird, on-alert vibe and we couldn’t really get comfortable.

My niece, Gabriella learned about a building that she wanted to see, so that got us wandering around and finding these beautiful facades which for me was the best part of the day!

As for going up the Eiffel Tower. Bleh. On the ground it felt like a run down amusement park. The views were ok, but I think Paris is 100 percent more interesting and beautiful at street level.

We Louvred it!

P1270850It’s such an over-the-top, dauntingly gigantic collection! We were in deep, with Italian and French painting and Egyptian artifacts. After the universal bad sleeps of last night, wearing ourselves out at the museum and polishing off a bottle of wine I hope to have a great rest tonight.

Roaming the Marais District and St. Chapelle

P1270773It was another damp, chilly day. We headed out for coffee and croissants first thing, (first of many!) and then roamed through the Marais District, poking into interesting shops. I had read about the redevelopment of the Les Halles ( which was a fairly uninviting area in 2010, my first visit) and I think this is a huge improvement. It creates a good space and though modern, is warm. The design for the garden looks promising. It’s a mess of construction right now.

IMG_0690These are called “pralulines” and we may want to eat one every day.

IMG_0693IMG_0692Everyone agrees that this was the highlight of the day. I can’t do justice to the glass with a photo…but the truth is, I was more caught up in the architecture, which understandably gets less attention. The pattern and gold leaf finishes are beautiful!

Louvre tomorrow! Gabriella is up late studying to prepare.

Sleepwalking in Paris

We spent a good part of the day stumbling around in a jet-lagged state. The flight felt quick, we breezed through French customs and got to our apartment in the Place des Vosges around noon. After stocking up on groceries, we napped a bit and then dragged ourselves out to Notre Dame.

It’s been pretty cool and gloomy here today. We were all chilled after our walk about but still went for ice cream at Amorino’s. (tourists!) And though we are stupidly tired, we were sitting up around the table at 9:30 pm. Looking forward to sleeping well!

6 Tickets to Paris – On our Way!

6 TICKETS HEADER

I’ve created a blog on tumblr for our group of travellers to keep a travelogue. If you are interested in checking it out, here is the link:  https://6tickets.tumblr.com

I’m going to keep my own travelogue right here on Sparks & Wonder.

Our travel included: Van trip from Windsor to Toronto (thanks Bern!) flight to Paris, no mishaps there and a reserved van from the airport. We were a little sleepy afterwards. For days afterwards. As you can see, Gabriella has gone with pink for travel accessories.

PARIS, paris

I am in Windsor now,  doing last minute projects ( I made a pencil case!) and being annoyingly helpful (accent on annoying) to anyone who hasn’t packed their bag yet. As in, “Are you taking that? It seems heavy. Do you really need all those shirts?”

After a year-and-a-half of research and preparation we are ready to fly! Our multigenerational adventure will include myself, my sister, JENNIFER, her daughter, GABRIELLA, our mother, NANCY and my sister’s best friend, MARA and her daughter, OLIVIA. Gabriella is 20 and Olivia turns 18 the day we arrive. Pretty sweet ages for a first trip to Paris! Pretty sweet for my mother too at 72!

We will be landing in some political havoc but I hope we can stay out of it, and be able to  just enjoy all the things we’ve been looking forward to.

A link to our itinerary, subject to change with whim and weather. Except the going to London part. That’s happening! We have tickets to “The Cursed Child”.

I am always so excited to get out my “travel things” but this go around, a lot of the “things” were looking pretty damn shabby! I guess you should have a new pencil case every 18 years or so.

Hello Again

CALENDAR-CAFE-DRAWING

I started Sparks & Wonder, with the intention of posting creative projects and sharing things that inspire me, but back in 2013, I was slaving away in the film industry for months at a time and doing my living between projects. I found it difficult to write about what I was up to or be productive or keep any continuity. I decided I didn’t like blogging, converted Sparks to a portfolio site that I was never happy with then just closed up shop for a while to figure it out. Since then, I’ve quit my 60 hour work week, moved from Vancouver to Victoria and I’m trying to cultivate a work life with diversity and time for writing and creative projects. Granted, I’ve spent a bit too much time underemployed and staring out into the yard, but the birds sing here, it’s green and floral. I have a deck! I am mesmerized by the view. So different from my beautiful South Granville place and the roar of traffic.

As I’ve parked my portfolio on a new site all to it’s own, I’m starting from scratch again here and we’ll see where it goes. My portfolio can now be seen at canzilacreative.com.

Welcome to Sparks & Wonder!
